Because of this fact, The Assault paints the image of the suffering of this child without having to deal with comparative issues such as the calculus of suffering often encountered in post-war life and discussions of the past. The main character in this text is a victim in his own right, and one is not explicitly invited to discount his suffering because others have suffered more. Nevertheless, while the text does mention the suffering of a collaborator’s child, the narration does not dwell on his experience; and the protagonist, Anton, is too involved in his own suffering to extend much sympathy to the other.

74) Anton imagines that a compromise must have been struck, that his parents must have been listed on the condition that Peter be excluded, as “[he] belonged, at least in a broader sense, to those who had died as armed resistors, for whom there were other monuments. ” (74). The narrative calls attention to an attitude which attempted to weigh and calibrate both the suffering and the involvement of various segments of Dutch society during the war, thus attempting to gauge their value to society, and to determine whether or not they deserved a certain kind of pension, or the respect of the populace.

Anton’s Story a case study: family dynamics Before I proceed to discuss the variety of texts published in the Netherlands in the 1980s which engage the memories and histories of the children of the war, I begin with a detailed and deliberate discussion of the novel The Assault,1 a text which offers opportunities to identify and illustrate many of the issues central to the other texts which contribute to the debate about memory and the history of the children of the war. The detailed analysis of this one representative text will function as a benchmark for more abbreviated treatments of other novels in subsequent chapters, and will permit a careful delineation of the function which language inhabits in mediating the memory of World War II, the Holocaust, and the occupation of the Netherlands in Dutch literature.
